Rites Held Thursday for M. J. McGowan

Funeral services for M. J. McGowan, 66, for 40 years publisher of The Appleton Press, were held Thursday morning at St. John's Catholic church in Appleton. Interment was made in the Appleton cemetery.

Mr. McGowan died at his home here Monday, Jan. 4, after a long illness.

A solemn requiem mass was officiated at 10 a. m. with Rev. T. D. Szymanski, pastor, as celebrant. Rev. Fr. Richard King, of Clontarf, as deacon and Rev. Fr. Russell E. Doerrer, of Benson, as subdeancon. Altar boys were Gary and Rodney Haugland, Robert Setterberg, John Taylor Jr. and Martin McGowan III.

Pallbearers were L. A. Hancock, A. E. Arntzen, Kermit Knutson, E. W. Pederson, G. L. Haugland, and George P. Rheingans. Honorary pallbearers were A. E. Benson, T. L. Gill, C. A. Miller and Dr. V. M. Hanson.

The American Legion and VFW cooperated by providing a color guard and firing squad at the cemetery rites.

Rosary services were held at the Anderson Funderal Home on the Tuesday evening preceeding the funeral and at the McGowan home on Wednesday by the St. John's Rosary Society, Young Christophers, and Men's club.

A. Gimmestad, of Dawson; Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Kaercher, of Ortonville; Arnold Berglund, of Milan; Alvin Henningsgaard, I. M. Iverson and Theo. Slen, of Madison; Fred B. Stevenson, of St. Paul; and Mrs John Weisman, of St Cloud.
